We encourage every patient to visit us at least once every six months so we can professionally clean and examine your teeth. However, this isn’t enough to promote a healthy smile. Between each routine cleaning and checkup you must maintain good oral health habits at home. For example:

Brush & Floss

Brushing and flossing every day are the most beneficial things you can do for your teeth and gums. The American Dental Association and our team recommend brushing twice a day for two minutes each session and flossing at least once a day to reduce plaque buildup. Don’t forget to brush your tongue too!

Rinse with Mouthwash

Rinsing with an alcohol-free mouthwash can help kill bacteria in your mouth and freshen your breath.

Maintain a Balanced Diet

Eating a balanced diet low in sugar can help keep your teeth and gums healthy since there will be less fuel for bad bacteria. Limit your consumption of acidic foods and drinks too, which can erode your enamel.

Drink Plenty of Water

Water washes away food particles and bacteria from your teeth and gums. This helps prevent plaque formation. It also allows for sufficient production of saliva, which is important for strengthening your enamel through remineralization. Whenever possible, opt for water or milk instead of juice, coffee, tea, soda, and sports drinks.

Regularly Replace Your Toothbrush

Remember to replace your toothbrush every three to four months. Replace your toothbrush sooner if the bristles become frayed or if you’ve been sick.
