What Is Dental Sedation?

A significant concern for many patients about visiting the dentist is whether or not treatment will hurt. Fortunately, modern dentistry practices now include a wide range of advanced technology and anesthetics to ensure dental treatments are comfortable and as stress-free as possible. Dental sedation is one of these modern practices!

Dental sedation is a technique used by dentists to help patients relax and feel comfortable during dental procedures. It involves the use of medication to calm anxiety and fear, reduce pain, and allow the patient to remain still and cooperative throughout the treatment.

Types of Dental Sedation

There are several types of dental sedation, ranging from mild to deep sedation. The level of sedation used will depend on the patient’s anxiety level and the complexity of the procedure. The most common types of dental sedation include nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas), oral sedation, and IV sedation.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a gas that is inhaled through a mask. It is a mild sedative that produces a pleasant feeling of relaxation and detachment. Its effects wear off quickly so patients are able to drive themselves home after their appointment.

Oral Sedation

Oral conscious sedation involves taking a pill before the appointment. This type of sedation is more powerful than nitrous oxide. It produces a feeling of drowsiness and relaxation but patients are still able to respond to instructions from their dental team.

IV Sedation*

IV sedation is the most powerful form of dental sedation. It involves the injection of a sedative drug directly into the bloodstream. This type of sedation produces a state of deep relaxation and sometimes even unconsciousness. Patients who receive IV sedation are closely monitored for safety.

Who Can Benefit from Dental Sedation?

Dental sedation is a useful tool for patients who have dental anxiety, a low pain tolerance, a sensitive gag reflex, or other special needs. It can also be beneficial for patients who need a lengthy or complex procedure completed.
