What is a dental exam?

Dental exams provide an extensive view of a patient’s oral health. While each dental exam may be slightly different based on a patient’s oral health, most dental exams include dental X-rays and an oral examination followed by teeth cleaning. A comprehensive dental exam every six months or so allows our team to detect any signs of developing dental issues that could lead to decay or other problems. It is also a time for you to ask us questions and voice your concerns regarding your oral health.

How often should I get a dental cleaning?

Dental cleanings are often performed on the same day as a comprehensive dental exam. Therefore, we highly recommend and encourage dental cleanings at least every six months. During a dental cleaning, our hygienist will gently remove plaque and tartar build-up from your teeth and gum line, floss, and then polish your enamel. In some cases, patients who don’t visit every six months may need a deep dental cleaning to get rid of plaque and tartar on and below the gum line.

Can I eat after a dental exam and cleaning?

A dental exam and cleaning may also include an optional fluoride treatment. We highly encourage patients to opt for fluoride treatment as fluoride strengthens the tooth enamel and helps fight off decay. If you opt for fluoride during dental cleaning, we recommend waiting 30 minutes before eating, as this provides enough time for the enamel to absorb the fluoride. If you only receive a dental exam and cleaning, you can eat and drink right away!
